User-Contributed Transcription 85N. side, had two or three [inserted in pencil: miles] of level road along the bottoms course about E., and then left the Creek to the right and for five or six miles the road was over hilly ground to the bluffs of "Des Chutes" River; which at this place runs through a chasm of nearly 2000 ft deep, the river far away down in the depths of the earth appeared like a small creek The descent was steep and rocky, the hills covered with beds of Lava, broken into fragments, with boulders, escarpments, cliffs &c, crossed the river on a Ferry Boat and encamped for the night upon a small bank, emptying in just above The river at this place is about 50 yds wide, has its source in the Cascade Mts some 150 m S. of this and runs a N. course, with the Cascades to the W. and Blue Mts on the E. for about 1, 5 miles and empties into the Columbia R. fifteen miles above the Dalles. "River "Des Chutes" is a french word and means "River of Falls" and is by some called "Fall River"; A few willows growing upon its margin is the only timberThurs June 21st Our first move this morning was to ascend the Bluff to the table lands above it was fully as high, but not quite as steep and took as on the opposite side, from thence our course was E. for 5 m to a spring affording a small supply of water, and a few bunches of willows & a fine quality of grass around it, from this our course was N.E. over a gently rolling country for 7 m to the forks of the road, we took the right hand fork and in about � m it entered a ravine and
