52 but not much of it that is adapted to cultivation. The soil is gravelly and rocky near the river, and back near the foot of the hills it is a light red or second rate soil This locality is fifty miles from Eugene City and here I stopped a day or two, for the purpose of obtaining a little better supply of provisions, to last until I could reach the settlements on the Deschutes River, about 250 miles distant, I engaged sufficient for ten days, but recieved [sic] a scant supply for three, but with a good rifle, and a country abounding in game, I was not alarmed at the prospect of travelling one or two hundred miles, with no other provisions than could be supplied by the use of the RifleThursday March 15th Set out, and at two miles left the prarie country, and turned more to the right, following the course of the River, crossing a pretty and rapid stream some fifty or sixty feet in width and a short distance farther another stream of nearly the same width, rapidly hurrying its way on to join the Willamette 1/4 mile to your right about two miles from this last stream, pass through a handsome prarie of about forty acres at which place is located a small band of Klamath Indians, who subsist principly [sic] by hunting. One half mile from this prarie you cross a creek of 20 feet in width, with a violent current rushing over large boulders, rendering the crossing dificult [sic]. One mile from this and arrive at the eighth crossing of the Willamette
