44of small shrubbery As you reach the foot of the Mountain on the N. side, you are upon a small stream of some two feet in width, which is the main branch of the "Siuslaw" River, a stream that takes its rise near here, and runs westerly through the Coast Range of Mts and empties into the Ocean twenty five miles N. of the mouth of the Umpqua Passing the Siuslaw one quarter mile, I stopped for dinner at the house of D.B. Cartwright, a place of Entertainment, which has the appearance of as much pleasure and comfort as any place yet seen! A large and elegantly furnished house capable of accommodating scores of travellers [sic] always well and luxuriantly supplied with the necessaries of life, [five lines completely marked out] Leaving this place, I proceeded about six miles through a thick settled Country and stopped for the night where I had as good accommodations as one could well expect, in a small house with a family of at least a dozen children of all sizes, sexes and conditions Soon after leaving Cartwrights, you enter upon the waters of "Long Tom" a tributary of the Willamette which drains a large portion of this part of the Country, forming innumerable sloughs and marshes which during the winter season is almost impassible from the amount of mud and waterFeb 24 Set out in the morning
