User-Contributed Transcription 43[pencilled in top margin}Youncalla (Yank(Eagle); Culla (bird) Indian[ink text continues]with occasionally a settler, until you intersect the Road referred to, which leads from Oregon to California; near the intersection of this road the Creek forks, the more Eastern fork, heads off to the Eastward and runs through the flourishing Vally of Youcalla, and bears the name of Elk Creek while the more northern branch is called "Pass Creek" and takes its rise in the Calipooia Mts and runs a S. course and forms a junction at this place. Youcalla is an Indian word and the name was given to the highest Bald Mountain in the vicinity by the Aboriginees [sic] of the Country Youcalla is the handsomest part of Umpqua County, was the first settled and contains some of the most wealthy men in the CountyFeb 23d Left Youcalla, and pursued my way to the N. crossing Elk & Pass Creeks near their junction and kept up Pass Creek on the left side for about six miles passing several localities of farmers and one Saw Mill that seemed to be doing a good business, when I arrived at Estes's a a[sic] house of Entertainment and within one half mile of the foot of the Calipooiah mountain The Calipooia mountain is a cross Spur or range connecting the Cascades on the East with the Coast Range of Mts on the west, it is merely a timbered ridge, eight miles from one base to the other, of gradual ascent & descent, a good wagon Road over it, is the county line between Umpqua & Lane Counties It is timbered principally with fir, and cedar peculiar to the highlands, and a thick growth
