User-Contributed Transcription 53which is fifty yds wide, not deep or dificult [sic] to ford, here I was overtaken by four Indians, who were going up river to visit some of their dusky companions somewhere up in the Mts, they were on foot, and wading the river at this season of the year, which is deep and cold, seemed to be their delight, before starting in they procured a stick of perhaps six feet in length, and all grasping a firm hold of it, side by side, they boldly marched into the water, walked slowly, over the smoth [sic] slippery rocks, clinging to the stick as if life depended upon it, and if one slipped or lost his footing the others braced themselves for his support until he gained a foothold, the largest and strongest Indian always taking the place farthest upstream, to receive the strongest force of the current. A few minutes ride brought me to the ninth ford, of 40 yds wide, deep and rapid. was obliged to follow up stream in the water, on the opposite side about 150 yds and again crossed back, the two crossings are made to avoid a point of rocks making down from the Mts to the river Not far from these two crossings I arrived at the Eleventh ford, 50 yds wide, and nearly swimming my horses, the Indians were swept down stream some distance, but landed safely, Shortly reached the twelfth ford, 50 yds wide and as deep as any crossed today = The thirteenth ford, at which I arrived in a few minutes, fifty yds wide, and crossed by angling down stream, landing some fifty yds farther down than you enter, an half hours ride from here and cross a rapid stream of 12 feet in width, and at dark arrived at the 14 ford which is perhaps five miles from the last
