User-Contributed Transcription 51 It is a dangerous point, scarcely passible, some places animals are obliged to step up and down rocks of two feet in height, and if a slip or fall should occur, they would in all probability be precipitated into the River below some twenty or thirty feet, the distance over the point is about seventy five yds, when you are on River bottoms again, passing the point about 100 yds and again cross the River which is about 75 yds wide and misdsides to my animals, nearly all the way across, landing safely upon the left bank and continue up river, a short distance to the fifth crossing which is about fifty yds wide, rapid, but not deep, and in one half mile cross back to the opposite side again where I found the water deep & rapid, nearly running over the horses back, a short distance up stream and you cross a channel of the river of same width onto an Island of rocks and sand, covered with a sparse growth of willow and Cottonwood, at the extreme upper point of this Island, the road again crosses the River, and found it to be as deep as any ford crossed to day. A distance of about three miles from this ford and the Road enters an opening of prarie country, and here I found there were several bands of Cattle amounting to some 300 head, that were being ranched at this place, and two or three Log Cabins occupied by those employed in ranching. this open country consists of some five or six sections of prarie land, principally hills or high Tablelands, somewhat cut up with little valleys and ravines It is good range for a limited number of stock
