User-Contributed Transcription 35a rapid that obstructs all further navigation Around about the immediate vicinity of the mouth of the River, there are, in all perhaps twenty five occupied buildings, the place appears to be improving, but I can discern no cause why it should. for there appears to be no natural resource of the place whateverJuly 19th Left Rouge River on my return, and travelled the same route to Port Orford, over a rough hilly trail, with open patches of land bordering the ocean but generally a heavy growth of timber to your right [crossed out: left]. In front of the Town of Port Orford is a small Promontory, extending into the sea a short distance, with nearly perpendicular walls of rock upon three sides only accessable [sic] from the beach by a narrow foot path at an angle of nearly 45�; the top of this is nearly level, covered with soil with a small growth of shrubbery and one or two moderate sized spruce pine trees Upon this rock the first company of (the ten pioneers previously referred to) of settlers fortified themselves, and upon this almost inaccessable rock they were besieged by the blood thirsty savages; with a four pounder, covering the trail that led upon to the rock, they were in a manner safe from an immediate attack but the prospect of a siege, that might prove
