User-Contributed Transcription 48[tim-]bered, thickly settled country, to the mouth of the Coast Fork, and here I was misdirected, up the Coast fork instead of the middle fork, and was not aware of the mistake until I had travelled about fifteen miles up the coast fork, all the way through a beautiful vally [sic] thickly settled. Here I was again put on the right track & directed on a Road that run angling through the Country and intersects the middle fork road some fifteen miles from Eugene city Immediately after I [crossed out: was] turned upon the right direction [crossed out: road] again I came to the Coast Fork Ferry, and crossed over the stream being about fifty yds wide, some three miles from the Ferry, through timber and prarie land and you enter a pretty little place called "Cloverdale" which is situated on a low and level tract of land and contains about 12 buildings From this place my course was E. over gently rolling timbered & prarie land, very muddy & somewhat cut up with sloughs, when I intersected the Middle fork Road, and continued for five miles further and stopped for the night having travelled about thirty miles and was only fifteen from Eugene city my starting point this morningMarch 11 Set out in the morning and travelled three miles through level timbered land to the first ford on the Willamette (or middle fork) where the stream is about 100 yds wide & was midsides to my horses, a short distance farther and I found myself in an open prarie
