User-Contributed Transcription 54 This ford is not deep, crossed the main Channel and camped on an Island and tied my horses to trees without grass; the Indians had left me at the last ford, in a Cold, tired and hungry condition begging pitifully for something to eat, but I only laughed at their foolishnessFriday 16th Started early and in a few minutes crossed two narrow channels of the River on to the main land, and at about two miles crossed the fifteenth ford which was of about the same width and depth of the others At three miles from this you cross a rapid stream of 10 ft in width and then enter upon rolling land thinly timbered with yellow Pine, with not much undergrowth but a fine quality of Bunch grass which I was glad to discover, for my horses had had no grass since the morning of Yesterday, As you enter these prarie woods, known as the "Pine Openings" you leave the river to your right and do not approach it again; opposite the pine woods across the river, the Mts rise to a considerable elevation and one or two of them terminating at their tops in sharply conical, rocky peaks, some resembling the steeples of a church. After my horses had had sufficient time to graze, I started on, and soon after leaving the pine woods, and entering a comparatively level tract of heavy timbered land, consisting of very large and tall timber. Fir, cedar, but principly hemlock. about 1� miles after entering this heavy timber crossed a stream of thirty feet in width, after which I perceived the face of the country to be gradually ascending, which ascent
