38after following upstream, on the North side, about one or two hundred yds you enter the Prarie [sic] known as the "Enchanted Prarie", so called, from the Indians having some kind of superstition connected with it, this prarie is claimed and occupied, and at this place I stopped for the nightJuly 26Left Enchanted prarie and followed up the stream for about ten miles over a rough brushy road. crossing numerous small streams, when the trail leads off to the Eastward over a high range of timbered Mts. and after nearly a day of laborious travel the trail descended very precipitately for about one and one half miles to level land and in about one half mile from the foot of the Mountains you enter Cammas Valley and which proved to be an open prarie Country, thickly settled the first settlement since Ench [sic] Prarie From this my course was E. across this valley which appeared to be about four or five miles in extent. in the vicinity of this valley the S. fork of the Coquille takes its rise and at the crossing, four miles after entering the vally it is a stream of about twenty five feet in width After Crossing this stream the Road, which now had become a wagon Road, bears off still Easterly over a range of low hills, thinly timbered with Oak, for about six miles, then gradually descends into what is known as "ten mile prarie" where I stopped for the night; This range of hills last mentioned is the dividing ridge between the Coquille and the Umpqua Rivers; some time before entering Cammas Valley, you cross the line from Coos into Douglas county, It is not precisely known where the line is, has never been established
