34Engines and all sorts of machinery destroyed But that Indian war of 1855&6 finished the "poor Indians," for all the survivors were removed to the Reservation upon the Siletz some fifty miles North of the Umpqua The town at the mouth of the River has been rebuilt, stands on the south side, is called Ellensburg and is the County seat of Curry County. Mining operations have been resumed and business is quite flourishing. a narrow Strip of bottom land on each side of the River, with occasional little patches in diferent [sic] places constitutes the farming land from which the place is to be supplied, an extensive range or ranges of Bald hills on either side [crossed out: of the] yields an abundance of grass and they are already ocupied [sic] by numerous bands of Cattle which occupies [crossed out: the] a good portion of the time of about one fourth of the Citizens, and about one fourth is engaged in mining and trading and the balance in fishing and other business such as dairymen, laborers, dead heads &c
