User-Contributed Transcription 58accident occurred as the Emigrants were crossing in the year 1855. A Wagon was upset as it was drove into the River and a Mrs. Petty a lady Emigrant was thrown with violence into the River and from the bruises and strangulation soon expired, her grave is said to be on the left hand of the river, near this ford. I did not discover it. Crossed the second ford and after travelling about 25 miles camped for the night. The weather was showery towards evening, and to secure myself from the wet, I took possession of a pretty neat looking Indian Ranch, one side of it afforded me fine shelter, and the other an excellent supply of fire wood These ranches a [sic] built wholly of dry fir bark. peeled from logs and dead trees, and lain over a frame work of small poles, in such a manner as to be a protection from rain, There being little grass here in places I turned my horses out in order to secure as much as possible. It being scattered so that it would be out of the reach of picket ropes altogetherSund. 18th Sunday My horses were missing, and the first idea was that the Indians had stolen them, but soon found their tracks leading down River, apparently grazing along as little patches of grass appeared Followed the trail to the next ford below, and found that they had crossed, the water was deep cold and rapid, I did not like to wade it, but there was no other alternative, It was a cold bath to my lower extremities, but reached the shore and soon overtook my horses, who had found a little grass plot and was quietly grazing, returned for my saddle, Blankets &c and soon got under way and reached the Stock
