User-Contributed Transcription 57River bottoms, built for hunting Camps, for it is evident from what I have seen that the Indians are of a roving disposition There is not much game to be seen along the river, but by the "sign" and the large numbers of deers horns to be seen around the old ranches, it is evident that it is abundant in the Mts There is no evidence of Elk until you arrive at the thickly timbered country above the pine woods there I saw plenty of tracks, and more particularly in the edge of the snow, where they appeared quite abundant, also the tracks of the large gray wolf was plenty, and near the termination of the trip saw the foot marks of the large hare or rabbit, know in this country as the "Jackass Rabbit", an animal that I have never seen west of the Cascade Mts. in the Willamette or Umpqua Valleys This Route across the Mts was opened in 1853&4 for the purpose of attracting the Emigration to the middle and southern portions of Oregon, and during those years there was a good portion of the Emigrants come in by this route, which is somewhat nearer than the northern route, or "Old Emigrant Road". Old wrecks of wagons, broken Ox yokes, old Stoves &c may be seen upon the whole length of the road, while the Skeleton remains of dead Cattle may be seen at short intervalsSaturday March 17 Very cold last night and froze solid, the wolves howled tremendously, frightening my horses so as to cause them to break loose once during the night Started early and by 10 A.M. arrived at the pine woods and again stopped to give my horses a chance to graze.
