The afternoon gradually wore away, and as the much dreaded night set in, I could scarcely hope to live to see the light of another morning. A large quantity of fern was placed under around & over me. and every available means devised to keep me from chilling to death: Hedden worn to a skeleton as he was, working like a beaver all the time night & day. fearfully exposing himself and suffering much more than any other living man. probably, would have done. in his efforts to save my life, which he could not believe would last long Of course the night gradually wore away, and in the morning I found that I was still able to stand when when [sic] placed on my feet but required a greater effort than yesterday, I was bent forward considerable more than previously, and my body much more inflamed and swollen, and badly discollored [sic] It was evident to both that a crisis would be reached very soon, and probably within a day or two at the longest
