Summary
Diary kept by Ferdinand Hercher of Burlington, Iowa, from Oct. 12, 1861 to April 3, 1862, while a soldier in Company C of the 36th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. Hercher's "daybook" contains descriptions in both brown ink and pencil of the marches and encampments he experienced in Missouri and Arkansas. He includes comments on the weather, the camp food, clothing (or the lack thereof), illnesses and hardships, the friends who have died, and the people back home in Burlington, Iowa, with whom he corresponds, especially Mary C. Marriott. The entries for March 7-8, 1862 provide a first-hand account of the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas. Last leaf is a makeshift check, dated Feb. 10, 1862 in Lebanon [Mo.], to Rev. Andrews, payable from funds owed to Hercher by S.J. Loftus. Other miscellaneous notes on the front and back endpapers are Hercher's lists of addresses and correspondence, and his financial accounts.
