User-Contributed Transcription 159much in need of something to eat, I secreted my horse in the willows, and vainly endeavored to entice the trout to lay hold of the bait, but it was no use, I could prepare the bait but could not make them eat it, and only succeeded in taking two or three small ones, and again was compelled to resort to the rifle to secure food, and hearing a flock of geese floundering in the water I made my way in that direction and secured a nice one; It was now nearly night, but concluded to travel some distance yet tonight before I camped. Saw the tracks of Indians, that had been made along the trail since I went South, and after the sun had set, as I approach the River bank, I noticed the water to be under motion as if some animal was wading or swimming in the River, Approaching the bank carefully. I saw a large naked Indian with smooth & glossy hide, engaged in catching Clams or something else, an occupation they often resort to in this vicinity, whether he had heard the report of my rifle some 3 or 4 m back or not, I could not tell, neither did I care, It seemed cruel to disturb him for no doubt he was preparing [insert in pencil: food] for his mate & young a dainty supper, but discretions is always the better part of valor & as the report of my gun reverberated over the valley, this noble specimen of animated nature threw the water tremendously and tried hard to regain the shore, but the blood spirting [sic] from a good sized bullet hole in the vicinity of the heart was good evidence that his efforts were fruitless, he weakened and seemed to sink quietly in 3 ft of water
