User-Contributed Transcription [no page number; right margin of page is cut off in several places]and backed off from the plan, at the same time drawing my Rev[olver] a Colts six shooter "Navy" size, the advancing Indian snatched my gun and with the breech of it aimed a blow at my head, with intent to knock me down with it before the pistol could be cocked & fired, and he came near accomplishing [it] never did mans fingers move more nimbly than mine, and at the instant that the pistol fired the breech of the gun descended upon my left arm and head with such force as to knock me down, I was not stunned and jumping up I [?saw?] the Indian stumble and fall near me with the bullet in his breast by this time the other had mounted his horse, and fled for the timber. I fired two shots but did not bring him down, his [?comrade's?] horse followed him, I examined the "poor" fellow & found him really dead, so picking up my gun whose failure to perf[orm] duty had So near proved fatal to me, I found that the blow had nearly broke the breech off, having checked it to suc[h] an extent that could not safely carry it without first {?] it in order to give it firmness, My head pained me some little, and quite a bump was appearing upon it as well as u[pon] my arm below the elbow, but was highly satisfied w[ith] the result, and heartily congratulate myself to think that "it was no worse", proceeded on camped in the Mountains, after which I soon reached the settlements on the west side passed the Willamette Valley Via "French Prarie" Salem, Corvall[is] and reached Elkton in Umpqua County about last of the Month[L L WILLIAMS drawn in very elaborate lettering][upside down to the narrative above, page number 8 followed by samples of the alphabet in upper case, lower case and a more elaborate upper case]
