User-Contributed Transcription 182invitation, to partake of the Comforts of their Encampment for the day, I here found that I was yet 14 m from the Settlements and in the evening, in addition to my daily Venison, I was furnished with a good supply of bread, a luxury not enjoyed for the last three weeksThursday Sept 20th Left. the hunters hospitable Camp this morning, and in two miles left the burnt timbered bottoms, and entered green timber, very large & which continued to "the Settlements" a distance of 14 m from the hunters camp, Fir. Hemlok [sic] & Cedar is the principle timber & grows very large, As you arrive within two or three miles of Civilization, the country is more open, praries & timbered oak ridges alternating, At the first occupied dwelling I put up for a few days to recruit myself and horse, which both very much stood in need. And I was surely fortunate in securing a good locality, for Mr. J. W. Stormant my host, proved to be a kind and obliging farmer who had occupied his premises for six years with an interesting family about him, and appeared delighted to provide, all the luxuries that the garden, dairy & Orchard would yield which can only be "duly appreciated" by one who has been roughing it, in the Mts for nearly four weeks, depending wholly upon the products of the chase for support, From him I obtained much information relative to the trail across the Mountains by the McKenzie
