164[page folded so that text in left margin is obscured]upon game for subsistence, which in being compelled [to] fire upon, was all the time in danger of arousing [the] enemy that would, otherwise be avoided I now had but a small supply of food but [seeing] deer track quite plenty, relieved me from [all] anxiety on that point. and now my only fear [was] that I would not be able to find grass [s]ufficient to sustain my horse through the Mts. Continued up the acclivity of the Mts for 6 m [seeing] numerous bands of black tailed deer, when [I] arrived at a point from whence I had a fair [view] of the southern sister, looming up before my [I] descended from this eminence, and for 4 m I had [a] nearly level spruce pine & pummice stone plain [which] brought me to vicinity of the foot of the [S}outhern sister, and from thence commenced [to] ascend over the N.E. spur of the said sister [over] the pass, previously referred to, the ascent [was] quite gradual. but very much obstructed by [huge] piles, masses & ridges of Volcanic rock, which [was] scattered over the ground to such an extent [that] it was with much dificulty [sic] that I could [get] my horse along, but after long and arduous [toil] of 4 m amongst this volcanic matter I [reached] the summit of the pass. and found [a] brisk little stream of 3 or 4 ft wide rush[i]ng down in a N.E. course from the Crater [of] this mountain, which was plainly visible from this place. the line of snow was some 4 or 500 ft to my left up the steep Mountain side Upon this side of the mountain were several deep [?canals?] or [?channels?] of 6 or 8 ft deep formed
