User-Contributed Transcription 172followed from the "Sisters" was the trail annually followed by them in going to & returning from their Hunting grounds in this vicinity, Therefore from the best I could learn from them, I was satisfied. that the branch of the McKenzie trail that passed between the Sisters, was a very blind trail, and had turned off to the Northward, not far this side of them, and now, my only resort was to make the best of it by going my old course N.W. until I did fall upon that branch of the Willamette I made myself comfortable today by all the time keeping a good fire, would gather bundles of huckleberries upon the bushes & seat my self by the fire and eat them In pleasant weather, they would have been delicious, Game was plenty, Deer Bear & Grouse, at sundown the storm abated & the night was clear & cold[crossed out: Thurs Sept 13]Frid Sept 14 Day fair, being out of meat, I spend the greater part of the day in search of game & met with very good success for deer, grouse & Bear were plenty, The snow was melting fast Feasted on roast Venison & Whortleberies,Sat Sept 15th I started this morning N.W. on a trail that the Indians told me led to their ranches & after about 2 hours travel over rough hilly ground I arrived at their camps which consisted of five or six lodges, situated in a little grassy ravine
