169 uneven ground, thinly timbered, you descend gradual for 4 m to a small lake of about 40 acres with an outlet of 2 yds in width flowing N.W. to McKenzie crossing this Creek & leaving the Lake to your left you ascend a steep hill for 1 m from base to summit at an angle of 40 It was a long & weary mountain to climb, but rendered less so, by the plentiful growth of huckleberries which grow all through the timber from the bottom to the top These berries are of a large black kind and grow upon bushes about 2 ft high, are the first of the kind I have seen in Oregon, here I shot a poor old Bear, but had no occasion for any of its flesh, for my venison was not yet gone From the top of this mountain the course of the trail was N.N.W. over gently rolling grounds, with [added in pencil: Spruce? & yellow] pine timber for 10 m to a grassy spot where I lost it, and camped for the night satisfied that I was not on the McKenzie fork trail, which I knew to be somewhere off to the N. of me, In looking about in this vicinity for the trail, I noticed newly made tracks of horses and soon noticed some recently deserted Indian Camps, From these indications, I suspected that I was on the hunting grounds of the warm Spring Indians, or of those few who yet remain on the borders of the Willamette, in either case there was nothing to fear for they are all considered friendly, The day has been cold & rainy, intermixed with snow, The huckleberries grow very large and more plenty than I have ever before noticed in Oregon
