User-Contributed Transcription 228 Monday, June 24th 1861 Having made the necessary arrangements for a trip to Walla Walla with a band of Cattle, I set out from the Claim of Cyrus Heddin, in the precinct of Elkton, Umpqua County, Oregon, [crossed out: on] with a band of 107 head of Cattle. and the Necessary horses and pack animals.. To give assistance in the first days drive. I had besides William Patterson..James M. Merrick and Daniel Test. (my men employed) P.P. Palmer. A.G. Langdon Julius Chamberlain Daniel Dimmick, John Mulkey and G. Mehl.. Among the many scenes and excitements of starting a band of Cattle, it is frequently more advantageous to a drover to keep his band together, at the starting, than at any other time on the Road.. We had remarkably good luck and reached the Ferry on the Umpqua River, and succeeded in Swimming the Cattle to the otherside [sic] during the afternoon. without much detention or loss of time. The Cattle swam badly,, by striking down stream and landing at intervals on either side Stayed in the Kellogg bend until Thursday June 27th. When we set out at 9 A.M. The Road was brushy, but Cattle drove well, and we reached Green Valley in the P.M. & Camped near Beazley Lost a Cow to dayFriday June 28Reached Yoncalla in the P.M. and camped in Burts Lane,
