I discovered the fine pummice [sic] stone dust rising a short distance from me, and thinking it to be mounted Indians I prepared for defence [sic]. but was soon able to make out fifteen or twenty Antelope, running at full speed nearly towards me, they passed within a few yds & if I had not had a good supply of fish yet, I should have tried to secure one This barren [crossed out: of] Country of pummice stone appeared to produce nothing but pine trees, no grass, or small vegetation of any kind, except occasional Chapparal brush, The pumice stone upon the surface, is pulverised finely, but five or six inches below, it appears solid, and can notice large blocks of it thrown [insert in pencil: up] at places where the wind has uprooted the large pines, it is a porous rock of various colors gray, white yellow & reddish, and so light that it will float upon the water as readily as cork or any other light substanceWed Sept 5th Travelled about 12 m S. upon this sandy land nearly level, principly Spruce pine timber, with the Cascade Mts some 8 or 10 miles to the W & the Blue Mts some 4 or 5 to the E. when I was some little surprised, by entering an extensive valley of rich land, level, with fine grass, and some 20 miles in extent from N.E. to S.W. I stopped upon the margin of this to allow my horse to graze, and ascended a pine tree to ascertain whether there were any discoveries to make I could see smokes curling up from diferent [sic} localities on the south side, also a pretty good looking
