User-Contributed Transcription 170Wed Sept 12th Rained all night, with considerable snow intermixed, this morning it is some little colder and still snowing, which begins to show itself on the ground, I rode about some little in search of the trail. thinking that I would follow it a little farther, and if it did not make more northing I would strike off N. without it, After searching a short time I perceived that I was on the hunting grounds of some Indians and noticed a band of hoses running about over the brushy hills. It stormed so furiously and I became so cold that I was obliged to stop & build a fire before I became so cold as to not be able. unfortunately I selected a poor position, in a grove of large green firs, but a great scarcity of dry wood, Yet I was in hopes that the storm would abate before night so that I could seek some better quarters, but as the day advanced, the storm increased and as night set in the snow was six inches deep, with a prospect of its being much deeper before morning; At best, I could obtain a small supply of limbs that were dry enough to burn, and with what blankets I had it would be impossible for me to keep warm exposed to the pitiless storm without a fire. I had dificulty [sic] in keeping a blaze agoing, it kept me all the the [sic] night steady, to collect limbs & sticks to preserve sufficient to warm my hands the snow increasing in depth and as
