User-Contributed Transcription 150of Willows on the river bank, to prepare my goose for serving up whenever I deemed it safe to kindle a fire for that purpose, while thus engaged upon the river bank, I noticed trout in the stream. and rigging my hook & line, I had the satisfaction of landing 25 or 30 lbs of beautiful fish upon the bank in the short space of fifteen or twenty minutes, and relishing a fish diet better than fowl, I threw my goose away The trout were large, some weighing as much as three lbs, they took the bait greedily and appeared to be very abundant, From this point the stream appeared to bear off more to the right [insert in pencil: South westerly] while the trail kept a Southerly course, through the same kind of rich grassy bottoms alternating with small groves of Spruce pine, for about 6 m, then turned S.W. for 4 m over the same kind of land, to the borders of a level Sandy forest principly [sic] timbered with Yellow pine, intermixed with spruce pine, this continued for four miles through a loose deposit of pulverised "pumice stone" in the form of dust of 3 or 4 inches deep, and no grass. to a small grassy bottom. where I stopped for the night, All along the trail today there has been deer and antelope tracks in abundance but only saw one deer, and that a white tailed doe and very wild, saw a flock of grouse and a few Sandhill Cranes. The Indian horse tracks referred to at West fork of Des Chutes are still making their way south upon the trail before me The Three Sisters and other snowy peaks to the S. of them have been visible all day, and like all the other snowy peaks, are ragged at their tops having
