User-Contributed Transcription 181River thus far are heavily timbered principly fir, and extend back from the River, from 100 yds to one mile, the road is considerably obstructed by fallen timber In fording the River I found it deep and rapid & about 60 yds wide my horse was in swimming water for a few feet but made the landing, considerably wet below the middle, The course of the river at the ford is W.S.W. Kept down River upon bottom land similar to that above the ford, for 15 m & Camped at a spot where there was quite an abundance of "timothy grass" growing amongst the burnt timber which had probably been sown here by some of the settlers below, for the purpose of benefitting their Stock, which might be ranched here to good advantage during the Summer season, The principle timber, Fir, Hemlock & Cedar with Cottonwood alder, Ash & Maple along the margin of the River, Three miles from camp trail entered burnt timber. and now the Road is much blockaded by fallen timber,Wed Sept 19th Kept along the River, down Stream, upon heavily timbered bottoms, nearly all deadened by fires, the Road considerably obstructed, crossing many small streams, and one of 12 or 15 yds in width, when at 10 miles I came upon a camp of four hunting characters from the Settlements below, who were in quest of a supply of Venison for the Winter & in a fair way of getting it, It was early in the day, but I could not resist the temptation of yielding to their kind
