User-Contributed Transcription 155 and ascended a spur to a sufficient height to over look the valley, determined if pursued to abandon horse &c and make the best of it in the Mts [added in pencil: on foot] and reach civilization by crossing over to their west side, I remained here until dark, and seeing no Indians. although their signals were often seen, I resolved upon crossing the valley to the S. side and avoid the Indians if possible, and make my way to Yreka, in California or to Rogue River Valley Entering the open vallley land again and after 6 m travel I found it to become wet and marshy, and the water soon became one or two inches deep, and the turf more soft, I did not, however, change my course until I found the water to be knee deep to my horse, finding I was not likely to cross, I changed my course to the E. which course I was able to keep for some little time, although the water was a foot or more in depth, and the turf more soft or shaky, in bearing a little more to the north, through high grass and large Tules all the time, I was stopped by a stream or quagmire, which I was not able to approach, Receiving poor encouragement in this quarter, I turned my horses head to West and for 8 or 10 m I was in high grass & tules and water nearly knee deep all the time, but was at last swamped in another quagmire or slough with a thin shaky covering of turf through which my horse often broke [crossed out: through] by means of breaking through the turf into a "bottomless pit" often causing me to get off into the water to help it up, and after floundering in this manner for some time I abandoned the idea of crossing to
