User-Contributed Transcription 168Sister, the ascent continued for 3 m when I found I was very near on the level with its snow line and must be in the close vicinity of that part of the trail leading from the McKenzie fork over the pass between the two Northern sisters I finally struck it and there being grass plenty I camped for the night without water From this point, the Western sister bears N.N.E. about 3 miles to its summit, the Northern one N.E. 6 m off. only portion of it visible & the southern one S.E. about 12 m. The country is open & Grassy, timbered with spruce pine & hemlock. These Snowy Mountains when seen from a distance. loom up in the form of huge masses of snow, but the nearer you approach them the more rocky they become, so that when not over 2 or 3 m off they appear to be Mountains of rock & snow, rent into innumerable chasms & fissures, and Craters, with Abundance of snow wherever it is level enough for it to lay[crossed out: Wed Sept 12th]Tues Sept 11th Started off on the trail which led off in a S.W. course which I was surprised to see for it must necessarily make considerable northing in order to strike the McKenzie river, which (according to my map) it must do very soon, I passed numerous small lakes or ponds of water. containing from � acre to 20 acres.
