153Indian house, upon the S.E. side of the Valley. situated upon a low bench of the Mountains, and small bands of Indian horses, grazing in diferent [sic] directions A few rods to the right of where I first entered this extensive grassy meadow, is a small stream of water, flowing through pond lillies & large Tules in a S. course, which convinced me that this was the head of Klamath, described by Fremont as "Klamath Lake" in "Lattitude [sic] 42 56' 51" and "Longitude 121 20' 42" " After some little deliberation, I concluded to keep on my course S. and the trail appeared to run nearly through the center of the valley in that direction, Small bunch willow was growing, around the borders, which I soon passed, and found that the, land [inserted in pencil: was] of good quality, grass & Red Clover excellent good hay might be cut in any place, but when I had progressed about 4 m I was brought to a stand still by perceiving "signal Smokes", rising in diferent [sic] directions upon the margin of the S. side of the prarie which convinced me, that I was discovered, and that the friendship of the Indians was not to be depended upon These signal smokes are built from dry material, burn quickly creating a great smoke, and [?dye?] suddenly. In this manner the Indians convey intelligence from one part of the country to the other in a telegraph manner with great rapidity, by having their signals understood, and then posting their Indians upon high points. so that they can see the smokes of one another's fires, and by firing alternately as fast as the others signal is understood, It is not uncommon for them to thus convey news for hundreds of miles
