User-Contributed Transcription 144 Here is a meadow of good land large enough for a nice farm, with excellent grass, and rich soil Along the Creek is a growth of birch, willow & aspen. and the hills, which are low, are covered with Yellow Pine, I stopped here for an hour to allow my horse to Graze, and in the meantime stood as sentinel near the track on the N. side of the meadow, The Storm Clouds hang so heavily upon the Mts today, that none of the great snowy peaks are visible, which I very much regret as they are excellent land marks to the lone traveller who is unacquainted with this part of the Country From this branch my course was S.S.E. [crossed out: my] for 15 m over a nearly level plains, sandy soil, Y.Pine & Juniper timber, with a heavy growth of "Artemesia" or wild wormwood & Sage brush At this distance I came to a little swale of Tules or Rushes. through which a small stream of very good water 3 ft wide was flowing E, From this the trail turns to right following up this little branch for � m & then crossing, you bear off S.E. for 5 m through open pine land, but no Juniper and Sage brush, to another Stream of 10 yds in width flowing E. Upon this there are small meadows of good farming land, surrounded by thick timber, among which may be noticed "Spruce Pine & Tamarack (Larches of Fremont) the latter perhaps 2� or 3 ft in diameter and from one hundred to 150 ft high , The country has not been very rocky today the principle rock noticed was ridges
