178by a cliff of 15ft, which was overcome in a similar manner, from this it was not so steep but what my poor animal could walk. and soon reaching a little spring branch near the foot of hill I was obliged to camp for the night, for my horse refused to pass it. I had been about 4 hours upon this mountain side, and it was some � m yet to the stream below, but gradual descent to the bottoms bordering it. It was sundown when I reached this stream or branch, and I tied up my animal without feed of any kind, This has been by far the roughest days travel I ever saw an animal taken over The timber has been fir & hemlock. with a thick growth of huckleberries & Manzanita brushMonday 17th I soon reached the stream below & found it to be 20 yds wide. and course N.W. to the McKenzie Along this stream were Beaver gnawings, and Elk trails were quite plenty, crossing to the N. side of the stream I was obliged to ascend a steep rocky bluff of 400 ft high, and near its top it became so steep that that [sic] it was impossible for my pony to make the ascent, and I only succeeded in gaining the top, by taking the rope up, & turning around a tree, and then bringing the end back as far as the horse, & whipping him forward as much as possible, securing every inch of the slackened rope, in my power, and when he had progressed a few feet would fasten him there by tieing the bridle firmly to a tree, then change the Rope some little farther up. & in this manner
