166and as this western sister is not over 12 m distant I will probably intersect the branch of the trail that leads between them, sometime late tomorrow I bult [sic] a roaring fire tonight for the first time since leaving the "Warm Spring River on the 30th last monthMonday Sept 10th The first thing that attracted my attention this morning. was the quietude of the stream. that was rushing down the mountain last night past my camp, with the roar of many "little waters" No noise of rushing waters was heard, every thing was still, the stream had ceased to flow, & I was obliged to take my departure without obtaining sufficient water to drink. this stream is formed by the melting of the snow through the day, and as it becomes cool in the evening, the snow ceases to melt, and the stream soon becomes dry From this camp I descended into a deep hollow. being between [crossed out: by] the Southern and more [?pret....?] sister. which appears to be a kind of a common receptacle, for the deposit of lava, ashes, scoria and other substances, in this I found some very deep yellow and reddish pummice stone A rocky channel or outlet leads off N.W. from this chasm or basin, down which it appears as if large rivers of Lava had rushed furiously at some former period. followed this descent some 4 m over blackened boulders, to a level. from which I soon reached the grassy borders of a chain of small Lakes extending for
