180To The Deschutes River, the company, blazed out the road, cut away some fallen timber and made it passable for loose animals & in 1859 several bands of cattle were driven over the route for the Walla Walla Country; But the Company, failing in getting as large subscriptions as they anticipated towards opening the road, finally abandoned it, and now it is nothing but a trail, which can only be traced by those who are accustomed to mountaineeringTuesday 18th I started off down River upon the trail in a W. course, and at about four miles I crossed the stream [crossed out: referred] mentioned yesterday; and it empties into the McKenzie in two considerable Channels At eight miles I passed through a small brushy prarie, of good land, & good grass, and at one mile farther, passed through two more praries near each other, of one or two Acres in extent In the vicinity of these praries, I noticed considerable Oak timber, of large size, some as large as 2� & 3 ft in diameter and forty ft to their first branches, About three miles from these little praries, last mentioned the trail crossed a slough, or a branch from the River, and � mile from this came to the "McKenzie ford" where the trail crosses over to the N. side of the River, this is the only crossing of the River from the settlements to Des Chutes, and I had looked forward to it quite anxiously, The bottoms of the
