User-Contributed Transcription 176to approach each other and unite in a few hundred yds farther, the Ca�on to the right nearly 2000 ft deep and almost perpendicular, seemed to spread out into a narrow bottom. through which the course of a considerable stream could be traced by the line of Maple, Cottonwood, ash, and alder timber upon its banks, which presented a diferent [sic] color in their leaves than the Evergreens growing betwixt these and the foot of the Mts As it had become necessary for me to descend from this high ridge, I sought a place where a point of green fir extended from the stream below, to the top of the ridge and thinking that I would be far more likely to find better route to the bottom than over the rocky sides of the ridge among boulder & cliffs &c with much fallen timber & fine brush I took the course [insert in pencil: or bearings] of a small level prarie, to be seen from this ridge in a N.W. direction, and about one mile beyond the stream to my right, and apparently in the midst of heavy green timber, and on low level land with a high range of Mts beyond, I much hoped to reach this prarie to camp for the night; and now descended the steep declivity, which I soon found to be much steeper than I had expected, and somewhat obstructed by fallen timber. and soon it became so steep that my horse, instead of walking or even lifting his feet from the ground, commenced sliding, and by keeping him steady I made good progress yet, until I met with a mass of fallen timber, which I could not possibly avoid, for
