User-Contributed Transcription 147 Heavy pine timber lines the banks on the W. side, but on the E. there appear to be Spruce pine & Juniper , Follow up stream, near the R. for 1 m and then bear more to the right in a S.W. course to avoid a large marsh of 2 or 3 m in extent lying between the trail & River, passing this Marsh you arrive at another small Lake of 100 yds in extent covered with pond lillies, and soon find yourself again on the Bank of Des Chutes but what a contrast! one would scarcely believe it to be the same. rapid, rushing turbulent stream seen a few miles back, for here it was smooth, clear deep and 60 yds wide, a pretty stream for navigation The water was so clear that millions of speckled trout could be seen, much resembling fishes "swimming through the air", here was a chance to obtain a supply of eatables without "astonishing the natives" that might be in the vicinity, and I availed myself of it About 5 m from this about S.S. W. through low, level spruce pine woods, somewhat obstructed by fallen timber, the trail run on to a peninsula, formed by a bend of the River, and to a ford, where the stream was about 75 yds wide with a strong current, and fine gravel bottom It looked deep, and I secured my gun & ammunition (my only dependence for protection & support) as well as circumstances would permit, and rode in, the water was nearly over my horses back, but I landed in safety, Heavily timbered land appears [crossed out: close] along the river on the W. side, but you land on the E. side upon a large level prarie or meadow of good grass some 4 or five mile in
