User-Contributed Transcription 145of Volcanic boulders, Chapparal brush & "Manzanita" bushes have been plenty since crossing the Tule Swale a few miles back. Saw a Badger a few small gray rabbits, three Sage hens (a bird as large, or larger than a domestic fowl. inhabiting the Sage or Artemesia plains) several kiotas and the tracks of the large gray wolf, and a few deer tracks, The day being advanced I put up for the night under a tree and turned my horse out to grassSunday Sep 2d Crossed the creek and found it to be deep & very cold, This stream like the other crossed yesterday take their rise on the N. side of the "Three Sisters (Three noted snowy peaks in a cluster) and flow off easterly to Deschutes A few yds from the creek saw large boulder of 10 ft in diameter, that at some former period had been split into halves, and the pieces separated for a space of 6 inches and in the space was growing a pine of some 18 or 20 inches in diameter above the rock; as it had enlarged above the rock, it had formed regular shoulders, and was firmly seated growing as thrifty as any of its neighboring trees Three fourths of mile from the Creek, on the right of the road, upon a cliff of 20 ft high is to be seen some rude paintings, after the Indian fashion, but, with not much of a degree of skill After travelling 6 m S.S.E throug [sic] timbered & nearly level land came to a deep hollow in which was located a small Lake of 75 yds by 200 with outlet to the E filled with wild ducks
