User-Contributed Transcription 163the "Elephant," I was in a fair way to come in contact with a pretty fair substitute After giving the locality a thourough [sic] survey to his own satisfaction, he looked down as if in search of foot marks, and rode in to the River, that place that I had dreaded so much proved fatal to one, who was probably much more acquainted with it than myself, for a whizzing little thunderbolt sent him headlong into the DesChutes which no doubt proved a cold bath to him, (his horse gaining the bank on the opposite side From this I moved up River one mile & it being dark, I encamped. resolved to lay my course in the early morning N.W for the three sisters and cross the pass between them, leaving the Southern one to the left and the other two to the right, this route looked practicable from the Valley above, and being on my direct course, will attempt its passageSunday Sept 9th The night was cold and frosty, the geese & duck kept up such a noise that it would have been dificult [sic] for a restless person to sleep. I was off before daylight in the morning, the ascent of the Mts was a gradual slope, heavily timbered, and a loose soil of sand or pumice, into which a horse would sink 3 or 4 inches at every step, I now felt perfectly safe, although I could be very easily trailed, yet the the[sic] savage beast, seldom extend their pursuits [?wild an?] heavy timbered country, had in a manner become familiar with the dangers and dificulties [sic] pertaining to a trip through a country infested with Indians ferocious beasts & [blacked out words]. depending wholly
