WilliamsMonday May 19th 1862Set out from Scottsburg in Company with Job Watfield and Joseph Peters for a trip of exploration & hunting, to a Lake situated in the Mountains to the South of Scottsburg, from which flows Mill Creek a stream of some 15 or 20 yds wide, which empties into the Umpqua about 5 miles below Scottsburg Much has been said concerning this lake by Indians, and the few whites that have visited it but, No one has been able to obtain any definite knowledge of it or its locality From the Mouth of "Mill Creek we took our Boat up stream some two miles, and was stopped at this place by rapids that checked our further progress by water.. Here we left our Boat and made our way up stream on the left hand side (right bank) of said Creek found the Creek to be Crooked and rapid with narrow bottoms from ten to one hundred yards wide, covered with Salmon brier bush vine Maple &c. Elk and Bear tracks were plenty, and Beaver and Otter inhabited the stream.. Made slow progress clambering along the Creek, over fallen timber, rock &c crossing a small branch of 2 or 3 feet in width occasionally, when in the afternoon having travelled about seven Miles, we discovered a Small band of seven Elk gazing at us from the opposite side of the Creek about 75 yds off
