User-Contributed Transcription 171I had been thourghly [sic] wet for twenty four hours I surely thought that the temperature of the air was getting cooler, at all events a person in my situation would be pretty likely to "keep cool". By keeping myself employed all night, in order to keep circulation, and a small fire, I found as daylight appeared. that I was nearly exhausted, by fatigue. cold and exposure, As soon as daylight appeared I got my horse, which had spent the night around a small springy bottom, where the snow had principly melted by falling upon wet ground; I saddled up and started for some large Yellow pine timber some 3 m off, where I found plenty of dry wood & soon had a Comfortable fire, and remained here for the day, the snow was 12 inches deep and falling thick & fast Towards night, five or six Indian hunters came past my camp and if they had been anxious for a muss they might have been accommodated, for I had my firearms dry & in good condition for shooting. they proved to be warm spring Indians, and had their camp over to the N. some 5 or 6 m, they were returning from a hunting expedition I learned by these Indians that they were in the habit of coming out into this region annually for the purpose of hunting and drying berries, they knew nothing whatever of the McKenzie fork trail, but informed me that the trail that I had
