A good quality of grass borders these lakes on every side. which I was glad to see, for my poor horses sake, from these marshy borders I had a fair view of the Sisters, and could plainly see the Crater & channels of the Southern one where the Volcanic matter had poured foth [sic] during its eruptions, passing around to the right of these lakes along their grassy borders, I halted at their extreme N.E. limit, with a fair view of the most western sister, about 2 m off N.N.E. from whose perrennial [sic] snows flow many cold and rapid streams into these lakes, Their waters appear to be shoal, saw no indication of fish of any kind, waterfowl & Sand hill cranes were quite plenty, At the Northern extremity of these bodies of water there is a narrow pass leading N.W. by a gradual ascent. At this place I let my horse loose and ascended a mountain to my left, the top of which appeared of a deep red color and proved to be an extinct volcano, the top & sides wholly composed of red rock. in small pieces and in every imaginable shape, It had been in a melted state, and had run out over the surface cooled, and afterwards broken into fragments It was of the color of a mountain of brickbats and much of it had the form of broken crockery ware, Descended & made my way up the pass in a N.W. course which was leading me up near the southern extremity of the W.
