165by streams of Lava flowing down from the Crater depositing a solid mass of volcanic rock upon each side of these channels. which continually overflowed, increasing these walls in height, so that the channels are formed or appear to have been cut out of a solid ridge of rock, Pummice Stone and scoria and obsidian were seen in any direction among the huge masses of blackened Lava, the soil composed of a fine pulverised volcanic matter of gray, whitish & Yellow Color, the other two sisters lie off Northerly some 6 or 8 m but cannot get a fair view of them on account of the heavy growth of timber, The timber from the Fremont crossing to this place, is Yellow pine, Spruce pine & fir until you commence the ascent of the pass and get amongst the extensive deposits of Lava, & then there is not much but hemlock, the largest of which is about 2 � ft in diameter, Saw several flocks of grouse, to day and 25 or 30 Deer, which appeared very wild, but killed one fine one, As the day is somewhat advanced, and some little grass around this place, and no indication of grass or water if I continue on, I conclude to camp here for the night. and dry my venison for future use, I am now fully convinced that I shall make the trip comfortably, across the Mts in a weeks time unles [sic] I find it necessary to abandon my horse, The McKenzie fork trail passes a little to the [?] of the most western sister with a branch of it running over the dividing ridge and passing between the western and northern one
