User-Contributed Transcription 232Tuesday July 16thThe Cattle drove badly over the sandy & rocky road. reached the foot of "Laurel Hill" at Noon.. Made the ascent in good order and at about 3 miles farther Camped and found good grass at a Marsh about one fourth of Mile to the left of the RoadWednesday July 17th Made a good drive to day passed "Summit prarie" [sic] which we found to be very muddy. some of the Cattle mired down and had to be dragged out, some few patches of snow were to be seen among the thick timber, Corralled our Cattle on "Sandy Des Chutes"Thursday July 18th McMerricks Horse and my little mule were missing, the Cattle were so thin and so near starved that we dare not spend much time in searching for them therefore we Started on and reached the open Country at "Barlows Gate" in the afternoonFriday July 19th Did not move our Camp to day, McMerrick and Patterson, returned to Sandy Deschutes to search for the Horse & Mule. and succeeded in finding them and reached camp a little after darkSaturday July 20th Drove about 6 Miles and camped on Rock Creek
