The Umpqua River was higher by several feet than ever before since the Vally [sic] was settled by the Whites; Heavy rains continuing and on the 9th the River rose fully 20 feet higher than the high water of a week previous All the bottom lands were over flowed, & bridges. fences; houses, barns, Stacks of grain &c filled the River all day, as the rapid Current heaved them on towards the Ocean; A vast deal of Stock was drowned. hundreds of houses and barns were swept away the Inhabitants fleeing to the hills The little town of Scottsburg was entirely swept away, the Most of the farmers living in the River bottom land. losing everything houses & Improvements. Hay grain & Stock, Bridges were carried away & Road badly torn to pieces everywhere; The loss to the Umpqua Valley was frightful. Immediately following the Freshet, Came a heavy Storm & fall of snow of about 12 inches deep. and cold freezing weather prevailed for about one month. destroying nearly all the stock in the Country which had escaped the flood: I was calculating to
