User-Contributed Transcription 247burnt timber &c,, had no method of ascertaining the depth of Water in the Lake, but found it too deep for our setting poles nearly all the distance around it, even within a few feet of the Shore,, This Lake is formed by an eruption of Nature, throwing the Mountain across the Stream at its foot thus causing the water to raise and force its way through, forming the foaming Cataract, below the Lake,, The only formation among the rocks and Cliffs that I have seen, or been able to discover is the Sand Rock so peculiar to the Coast Country,, We left the Lake at 3 P.M. and made our way down stream 4 miles and camped at the mouth of the Stream of 30 ft wide which empties in at that pointFriday May 23dWe soon reached our first camp on the Creek of the 19th and found two Bears, in posession [sic] of our dead Elk succeeded in killing one, a Medium size and poor,, Reached our Boat in due time, and arrived at Scottsburg at 4 P.M. at at [sic] Hatfields at 6, considering ourselves amply paid, for our ever to be remembered and interesting trip to "Loon Lake"L.
