User-Contributed Transcription 245pond just to our right, in which was a few ducks. this pond is about 200 yds wide nearly round, and covered with the Yellow pond lillies,, Around this pond and on both sides of the Creek in the Vicinity, the brush, which is principly Salmon brier is very dense, so much so, as to assume the character of of [sic] a jungle,, Bear trails and Elk trails are extending through these jungles in every direction Passing this little pond, we find the bottoms more open, and the Elk sign more plenty; beautiful level land, rich & fertile extending for � mile or more on each side of the stream timbered with Maple, Myrtle Ash, following the leading Elk trail up stream, we very soon came upon a place, where the panthers had killed an Elk, the greater part of which was eaten up and the remainder buried We soon started a band of Elk, but did not see them,, After following up Stream in a course S.S.E. [?whi] found a place for our encampment, upon the left bank (right side) of the Creek, with a wet marsh of two or three hundred yards in extent a few rods to our right, just above this spot the Mountain puts down to the Creek. with a thorough beaten Elk trail over the spur to the level bottom just above,, we travelled up the Creek about three miles further and then returned to our Camp At the termination of our trip the Creek
