User-Contributed Transcription 107the surrounding tribes, the whites not excepted, I deemed it prudent to take the necessary precaution for safety, always looking out, and guarding against danger when among Indians, either hostile or friendly Consequently after dark I rode some 2 m towards the Umatilla & camped in the head of a rock ravine and tied my horse to a small block of Lava, some little distance below meTuesday July 17th Commenced the descent of the Steep rocky bluffs of the Umatilla, which flowed nearly 1000 ft below, the descent was dificult & dangerous, at an angle of 60� and in many places fine broken lava, covering the sides of the bluffs, which would often give way, and slide and roll down, with great velocity with a noise that might be heard for one or two miles, appearing as if the whole mountain side would break loose, and roll down to the Umatilla below, Perpendicular Cliffs were projecting at every side, and around these I was obliged to pick my way, and in many places I had much dificulty in obtaining a foot hold sufficient to prevent me from falling or rolling down with the masses of rock, that frequently went rolling and rattling down the precipices below me My horse being sure footed and well shod appeared to get along, in places where it was dificult for a man to obtain footing, After a tortuous route in a zigzag manner, of three hours, I found myself and horse safe at the foot of the bluffs and on a [?narrow?] bottom bordering the Umatilla. The River at this place is about 20 ft wide and its course a little S. of W. On the opposite side of the River
