User-Contributed Transcription 111[crossed out: being] doing well, if good looking Crops is any evidence Dry Creek is about 10 ft wide, with a current scarcely moving, runs westerly to Walla Walla Rivr, Crossing this Creek, we travel about 8 m over the same kind of open hilly country, and arrive at "Copy Eye" Creek, a stream of some 10 ft wide running N.W. and emptying into "Touchet" a branch of Walla Walla, about 3 m farther and arrived at "Whiskey Creek", another small branch of Touchet and camped for the night. no timber today except a small growth upon the streams The Country has been hilly all day. Saw about 50 Indians, with some 400 head of horses. on their way to the Umatilla ReservationFriday aug 3e Three miles from camp and we descended the hills into the Touchet Valley which we found to be about 600 yds wide from Bluff to bluff Through this valley the Touchet River flows in a course nearly West for the Walla Walla River and is the principle N. branch of that River. The Stream is about 25 ft wide. clear water & brisk current, with a belt of timber of some 200 yds in width bordering it, this Valley is as thickly settled as the character of the Country will permit the soil is good and produces excellent Crops Touchet is a french name, pronounced Too-cia The Bluffs are about 500 ft high. with volcanic Rocks projected out in places. Follow up the Creek 3 m and cross over to the opposite side, and directly after crossing, we leave the Nez Perce trail and bear off over the hills to the left in nearly a N. course. and in 4 m we reach the summit
