N. E. upon what is known as the "Nez Perce Trail," This trail leads from the land of the Nez Perces (Pierced Noses) Indians. from Snake River and the [?] N. of it, through the country of the Walla Walla [?] the Umatillas, and so on to the country bordering to lower Columbia, It has been a great thoroughfare for the Indians from time immemoriable [sic] . consists of some 15 or 16 trails of perhaps 12 inches apart running paralel [sic] to each other with great regularity. following this trail about 5 m over hilly ground and we descend into the little valley of "Dry Creek, which is some 300 yds wide between the hills. settled with farmers, who appear
