User-Contributed Transcription 116[some damage to left margin and right margin sometimes obscured by folded page][p]roceeded up stream one or two miles, finding a [suc]cession of rapids and Cascades, and the precipitous [bluf]fs of similar character, the water of this stream [is] dark and muddy looking, and much warmer [th]an the water of any of the surrounding [s]treams. At this place I caught a mess [o]f large trout, some weighing 2� and 3 lbs I left the River by the same rocky ravine by [w]hich I descended into it, and being satisfied with the portion of the Country, I made my way back to the Ranche of my old employer on Tucanon, where I arrived a little after dark The great objection to the country visited is the scarcity of farming land, and timber, there appears to be a very little timber [s]uch as willows, Choke Cherry, thorn &c along the Streams and perhaps a patch of 25 or 30 Acres of indiferent [sic] farming land. at intervals of two or three miles, the narrow bottoms are strongly alkalied, which is said to be a serious [o]bjection to farmingWed Aug 8th Started this morning for Umatilla [by] a little diferent route, than by which I came Went up Tucanon 3 miles and here are two localities of Stock Raisers, at the junction of [Tu]canon & "Pataha" Creek, a small branch coming in from the N. here I stopped for the nightThurs Aug 9thProceeded on my way up Tucanon for one mile, and then crosses to the S. side and entered a ravine, which I followed up in a S. course for
