119S.E. course. throug [sic] an open country of bald hills with scattering Yellow pine timber, for 10 m to the Bluffs of Grand Ronde Valley, which was spread [inserted in pencil: out] in the form of a basin or large circle of level land some 500 ft below you, the descent by the Road was quite steep and in many places rocky, here in this Valley I found a train of eleven wagons, principly [sic] families from Iowa & Illinois. who were on their way to the Willamette Vally to make Oregon their future home, This train had been stopping here for several days to, rest the men, women & children to [?recrut?] their teams, and last though not least to relieve a poor woman, from a pressing responsibility, caused by the pursuit of matrimonial pleasures, for a least, one month too late [crossed out: r than] for the trip across the plains, Consequently being overtaken by Squalls which rendered it necessary to detain the whole train as above stated. More plainly speaking a child was born, a smart active girl, making its appearance in this beautiful Vally at the same time that I was making the descent from the highland above, thus making the Grand Ronde famous for the birthplace of one, as it has been the death bed of many, as indicated by the numerous Graves in the vicinity This Encampment was selected in a very comfortable place, upon a small branch flowing from the Mts. upon which is to be found sufficient wood for camping purposes, At this camp I stopped for the day, and it was quite amusing to listen to the multitudinous questions relative to Oregon & Washington Territory In the P.M this train was joined by
